Our story
Deep in the heart of Durham

Kontek's headquarters in Durham allows us to provide access to the greater Research Triangle area and within three hours of the office. We generally limit our projects to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia because we believe it's important to have a strong on-site presence during construction, and to be able to respond quickly to service calls for the life of a system.
Most Kontek projects are structured in a design/build mode, which allows us to guarantee the performance of every system and provide the owner with a single point of responsibility. Because we represent and support over 100 major manufacturers and vendors of equipment/technology — including Crestron, Extron, Sharp NEC, Samsung, Vaddio, Biamp, ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, Cisco and Polycom — we have the tools to solve almost any design challenge.
Kontek's design awards include two Presentations Magazine “Best Presentation Rooms” certificates. Kontek is a member of the A/V trade associations AVIXA and NSCA. With a strong commitment to training & development, Kontek's design, programming, installation, and service staff maintain AVIXA certification in their individual fields of expertise as well as manufacturer certification from our primary equipment suppliers.
Our commitment to each other at Kontek extends to our commitment to our clients. We work hard together and take care of each other. We have fun together and we build lifelong relationships.
1989
The Beginning of Kontek
Kontek was founded in 1989 by Frank Konhaus, with a focus on designing and integrating reliable audiovisual systems for complex environments. Early work in higher education and institutional settings helped establish a design-led approach, prioritizing systems that performed reliably while respecting the architecture and aesthetics of the space. That balance of technical rigor and thoughtful design continues to shape Kontek’s work today.
1996
A Partnership Takes Shape
In 1996, founder Frank Konhaus invited Wes Newman to join the company. What began as a friendship quickly became a true partnership, bringing together complementary strengths in leadership, design, and technical execution. The collaboration helped position Kontek to take on larger and more complex projects while maintaining the thoughtful, design-driven approach that defined its early years.
1997
Rooted in Downtown Durham
In 1997, Kontek purchased and renovated a building on Holland Street, becoming one of the earliest businesses to invest in downtown Durham at a time when the area was still emerging. This decision reflected a long-term commitment to place, community, and thoughtful design: values that continue to define Kontek’s approach today.
2000
Entering Healthcare Environments
In 2000, Kontek delivered its first healthcare project, marking a significant expansion into medical and clinical environments. This work introduced new performance, reliability, and compliance requirements which laid the foundation for ongoing work in healthcare, simulation, and mission-critical settings.
2000s
Scaling Mission-Critical Systems
During the 2000s, Kontek delivered increasingly large and complex systems, including major operating room and clinical environments. This period marked a shift toward enterprise-scale, mission-critical delivery and laid the groundwork for more networked, software-driven AV systems that followed.
2021
An Employee-Owned Future
In 2021, Kontek became employee-owned, reinforcing a long-term commitment to accountability, continuity, and client partnership. Employee ownership ensures that the people designing, delivering, and supporting Kontek’s systems are directly invested in their success.
