From Student Vision to Industry Innovation

Thirty-seven years ago, a university student working in campus audio-visual services had a simple thought: "I could do this better."

Frank Konhaus didn't just have that thought; he built an entire company around it.

Today, KONTEK stands as a leading technology communication partner in North Carolina, transforming how organizations connect, communicate, and inspire.

What started with small campus upgrades and analog cables has evolved into sophisticated digital ecosystems that blend cutting-edge technology with architectural elegance. But our core mission remains unchanged: turning communication dreams into technical reality.

The Technology Revolution We've Navigated

The journey from analog to digital has been an exciting and inspiring one for us.

It began in the 1980s, when connecting one computer to one projector required cables, adapters, and sometimes hope.

Then came the analog sunset of the early 2010s. HDMI emerged, bringing HDCP protocols and bandwidth considerations that still challenge the industry today. SDI cables in live production taught us that quality absolutely matters; you cannot just buy the cheapest components from any big-box or online retailer and expect commercial-grade results.

And then the transformation accelerated dramatically. Those massive chassis-based systems, 128 by 128 matrices the size of shelving units, are now replaced by elegant network switches routing signals anywhere in a building. Everything travels digitally over standard network infrastructure, but the complexity hasn't decreased, it's just shifted.

Today's systems demand expertise in networking, IT security, construction coordination, and live production. That's why we invested heavily in building a team with diverse backgrounds. When you mix technology lovers with serious skills from different disciplines, you unlock solutions to challenges that would stump single-dimensional thinking.

The Dream Discovery Process

The most exciting projects for us start with clients who know they want something extraordinary but aren't sure what's possible. A new executive boardroom. An all-hands space that wows employees and impresses guests. A multipurpose venue that transforms from a simple meeting room to a professional production environment.

These conversations take us on a journey of discovery. How do you like to communicate? What's the surrounding environment? How bright is the room? Do you prefer natural light? We're understanding the vision, specifying equipment, and translating dreams into technical requirements, all while reality-checking against budget and physics.

The best part is getting to riff and brainstorm about possibilities in those early architectural meetings. When we sit with owners and architects before construction begins, we're exploring uncharted territory together. Some deployments become industry firsts, with manufacturer partners diving in with us to figure out what's never been done before.

These projects require coordination across skilled trades, general contractors, electrical teams, architects, IT departments, and security personnel. But when a client walks into their completed space for the first time and says, "This is exactly what I was thinking," or better yet, "This is more than I thought possible," that's the moment that makes everything worthwhile.

Durham Roots, Growing Vision

KONTEK was one of the earliest businesses to occupy a space downtown during the city's revitalization efforts.

That foundation shapes everything we do. Employee volunteer time. Pro bono projects. Supporting local causes not just with money but with hands-on involvement. When the community pours into you, giving back becomes non-negotiable.

We're proof that you don't need Silicon Valley or the Northeast to build a successful technology company. Durham-based, locally committed, and technologically sophisticated, we want the next generation to see what's possible right here at home.

What's Next?

More exciting and imaginative projects. More boundary-pushing. More integration of technologies that used to live in separate worlds, professional concert production capabilities in corporate boardrooms, building-to-building signal distribution, and streaming integration at scale.

The challenge is keeping everything accessible. If systems are so complex that only specialists can operate them, we've failed. When your family can walk up and use it, when someone can plug in their laptop and immediately start their Teams meeting without technical support, that's success.

We're expanding geographically, taking on special projects outside North Carolina for clients who want to invite us into their dreams. The question we're asking: who wants to explore what's possible when technology, vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence meet?

How long has KONTEK been in the AV industry?

KONTEK was founded 37 years ago by Frank Konhaus, a university student working in campus audio-visual services who believed he could build better AV solutions. What began with small campus upgrades and analog cables has grown into a leading technology communication company in North Carolina, designing sophisticated digital ecosystems for corporate, institutional, and live production environments.

How has AV technology changed from analog to digital systems?

The shift from analog to digital has fundamentally changed how AV systems are designed and operated. In the 1980s, connecting a computer to a projector required cables, adapters, and significant troubleshooting. The early 2010s brought HDMI, HDCP protocols, and new bandwidth challenges. Today, large chassis-based matrix systems have been replaced by network switches that route signals anywhere in a building over standard IT infrastructure. The complexity has not decreased; it has shifted into networking, cybersecurity, and systems integration.

What is KONTEK's process for designing a new AV space?

KONTEK begins every project with a discovery conversation focused on how the client communicates, what the environment looks like, and what the space needs to accomplish. From there, the team translates those goals into technical requirements while accounting for budget and physics. When engaged before construction begins, KONTEK collaborates directly with owners, architects, and contractors to shape the space from the ground up, sometimes producing industry-first deployments alongside manufacturer partners.

What makes an AV system successful according to KONTEK?

KONTEK measures success by simplicity on the user side, regardless of the complexity behind the scenes. If a system requires a specialist to operate, it has not met the standard. The goal is a space where anyone can walk up, plug in a laptop, and immediately begin a meeting without technical support. That level of accessibility is the result of careful design, thorough integration, and a commitment to building technology that serves the people in the room.
